In Search of the Miraculous

Review
"A very provocative book that can lead to a complete reassessment of what a reader takes to be his knowledge."-Saturday Review
Book Description
A new edition of the groundbreaking spiritual treasure, with a foreword by bestselling author Marianne Williamson .Since its original publication in 1949, In Search of the Miraculous has been hailed as the most valuable and reliable documentation of G. I. Gurdjieff's thoughts and universal view. This historic and influential work is considered by many to be a primer of mystical thought as expressed through the Work, a combination of Eastern philosophies that had for centuries been passed on orally from teacher to student. Gurdjieff's goal, to introduce the Work to the West, attracted many students, among them Ouspensky, an established mathematician, journalist, and, with the publication of In Search of the Miraculous, an eloquent and persuasive proselyte.Ouspensky describes Gurdjieff's teachings in fascinating and accessible detail, providing what has proven to be a stellar introduction to the universal view of both student and teacher. It goes without saying that In Search of the Miraculous has inspired great thinkers and writers of ensuing spiritual movements, including Marianne Williamson, the highly acclaimed author of A Return to Love and Illuminata. In a new and never-before-published foreword, Williamson shares the influence of Ouspensky's book and Gurdjieff's teachings on the New Thought movement and her own life, providing a contemporary look at an already timeless classic.

Science Fact and Science Fiction: An Encyclopedia
Science Fact and Science Fiction: An Encyclopedia
From Booklist
This is not an encyclopedia of science fiction, and it's not an encyclopedia of science, either. Instead, it discusses the impact of fantastic literature on science and vice versa. Author Stableford is a science-fiction writer as well as a frequent contributor to works about the genre. In an introduction, he describes the encyclopedia as a way "to construct and maintain bridges between the cultures of science and fiction."
The approximately 300 entries are academic in tone and cover topics such Botany, Postmodernism, andTime travel.Writers, like Ursula K. Le Guin, are included on the basis "of the relevance of their works to issues in science, rather than their importance within the history of genre science fiction." Also profiled are leading theorists such as Johannes Kepler and Karl Marx. Entries make frequent reference to fictional and scientific titles, but no bibliographies for further readings are included. A "Thematic List of Entries" groups entries by broad topics such as "Concepts," "Leading Figures: Scientists," and "Technology." The index includes titles mentioned in the text, which enhances the volume's usefulness.
The Greenwood Encyclopediaof Science ictionand Fantasy: Themes, Works, and Wonders (2005) also has thematic essays, but it focuses more on the science-fiction aspect of the concepts being described. Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (Facts On File, 2005) has a more literary focus. Science Fact and Science Fiction fulfills a different purpose than either of these works and will be a useful addition to reference collections in large public and academic libraries. Jack O'Gorman

Book Description
Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. As scientific developments alter expectations for the future, the literature absorbs, uses, and adapts such contextual visions. The goal of the Encyclopedia is not to present a catalog of sciences and their application in literary fiction, but rather to study the ongoing flow andcounterflow of influences, including how fictional representations of science affect how we view its practice and disciplines. Although the main focus is on literature, other forms of science fiction, including film and video games, are explored and, because science is an international matter, works from non-English speaking countries are discussed as needed.

Encyclopedia of Cancer, Second Edition, Four-Volume Set

From Booklist
Cancer in its many forms is one of the world's leading causes of death. Basic scientific research is slowly revealing a great deal about the causes of cancer and finding potential cures and preventive measures. This three-volume encyclopedia provides an overview of cancer research for medical practitioners; most articles will also be accessible to educated laypersons.
Editor in chief Joseph R. Bertino, chair of the Program of Molecular Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, has assembled an international team of 297 scientists currently working in the field to write the 163 signed articles in the encyclopedia. The alphabetically arranged articles cover a wide range of subjects in the areas of molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology, radiation therapy, biology, and virology. Specific topics covered include Cell cycle control, Multistage carcinogenesis, DNA damage, Mutation and repair, and Viral agents. Each lengthy article has a table of contents, a glossary of terms, and a bibliography. Cross-references facilitate access to related material. Approximately 500 black-and-white and color illustrations and 250 tables augment the text.
Each volume contains two tables of contents for the entire set: an alphabetical list and a subject area list that arranges entries by broad topic. There is also a detailed index with more than 10,000 entries. A 1,500-term glossary completes the set.
The Encyclopedia of Cancer is unique because of its multidisciplinary approach to cancer. Most biomedical sources emphasize the clinical aspects of the disease. While it will not help patients make treatment decisions, it will tell them about current scientific research that may lead to new regimens. The Encyclopedia of Cancer is an essential source for biological and health sciences collections. Large public libraries with sufficient funds will want to consider it, too. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Cryptography: Theory and Practice

Amazon.com
Douglas R. Stinson's Cryptography: Theory and Practice is a mathematically intensive examination of cryptography, including ciphers, the Data Encryption Standard (DES), public key cryptography, one-way hash functions, and digital signatures. Stinson's explication of "zero-sum proofs"--a process by which one person lets another person know that he or she has a password without actually revealing any information--is especially good.
If you are new to the math behind cryptography but want to tackle it, the author covers all of the required background to understand the real mathematics here. Cryptography includes extensive exercises with each chapter and makes an ideal introduction for any math-literate person willing to get acquainted with this material.
Book Description
Cryptography is an outstanding book that covers all the major areas of cryptography in a readable, mathematically precise form. Several chapters deal with especially active areas of research and give the reader a quick introduction and overview of the basic results in the area. Cryptography provides the mathematical theory that is necessary in order to understand how the various systems work. Most algorithms are presented in the form of pseudocode, together with examples and informal discussion of the underlying ideas. The book gives careful and comprehensive treatment of all the essential core areas of cryptography. Also, several chapters present recent topics that have not received thorough treatment in previous textbooks. Such topics include authentication codes, secret sharing schemes, identification schemes, and key distribution.
See all Editorial Reviews
The philosophy underlying the previous edition stays the same. The presentation of concepts is rigorous but neither difficult nor trivial, suitable for readers with basic notions of linear algebra. Moreover, new material has been added.
Chapter 3, which deals with block ciphers and linear and differential cryptoanalysis, is very well-written. This is the best presentation of such a subject in few pages I have seen until now.
Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 have been significantly updated and expanded with concepts and techniques that are fundamental in order to understand current researches and state of knowledge in Cryptography (e.g., random oracle model, semantic security, new attacks against public key cryptosystems, an in-depth introduction to elliptic curve ...).
Compared to the previous edition, more emphasys has been given in some parts to security proofs (e.g, chapter 4), and several new exercises have been proposed at the end of each chapter.
Other readers have pointed out that there are some typos (the author has made available an errata list on his home page) but I think that the value of the book is not reduced in any way.
In my opinion it is a great book for people who want to be introduced to problems, ideas, and techniques used in Cryptography.

Encyclopedia of Supramolecular Chemistry - 2 Volume Set

Description
Crystallizing a rapidly expanding interdisciplinary field, not to mention one of the most popular and newsworthy areas in contemporary chemistry, the two-volume Encyclopedia of Supramolecular Chemistry offers authoritative, centralized information on the topic. User-friendly and high-quality articles parse the latest supramolecular advancements and methods in the areas of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, environmental and materials science and engineering, physics, computer science, and applied mathematics. Designed for specialists and students alike, the Encyclopedia covers the fundamentals of supramolecular chemistry and sets the standard for relevant future research.
From the time that chemists could characterize and manipulate molecular architecture, methods have been sought to enhance and modify molecular properties with an eye toward, among other attributes, intra- and intermolecular interactions based on covalent and noncovalent means. Evolution of the study of these properties and interactions has led to the supramolecular regime, whereby noncovalent molecular interplay produces effects and properties not ordinarily exhibited by the individual components.
This supramolecular tenant, defined by J.M. Lehn, is classically exhibited by the action of a micelle, whereby surfactant molecules aggregate into a globular motif that is capable of enhancing molecular guests' solubilities or acting as nanoscale reactors and transport vehicles, to mention but a few utilities. The micelle architecture, as well as the lipophilic-hydrophilic character, leads logically to the consideration of dendrimers as supramolecular components; this potential is herein chronicled.
Dendrimers are first examined with respect to their ability to solubilize molecular guests in environments that, without added dendrimer, would exhibit unfavorable solubility properties, such as dissolution of water-insoluble molecules. Numerous dendritic architectures are highlighted with respect to this phenomenon.
The potential of dendrimers to encapsulate molecular species is further examined from the perspective of catalysis and the ability to improve reaction rates and yields. As well, their use as components facilitating chromatographic separations is discussed. Finally, the use of dendrimers to effect noncovalent molecular ordering is examined.

Ontologies-Based Business Integration
Ontologies-Based Business Integration
Book Description
The globalization of everyday business and increasing international trade lead to a growing need to improve national and international business collaborations and transactions. Upcoming new technologies for e-business transactions allow for new ways of process, information and application integration. But business partners almost always have different ways to systemize the information needed to run the business, in terms of information structure, syntax and semantics. Consequences are mismatch and misunderstanding in electronic transactions. This book shows what ontology management can do for process, information and application integration under dynamic e-business conditions. We not only discuss research results and develop novel methods and frameworks, but also apply them to build business use application components that are deployed as web services.
