The word dominance, in the context of genetics, has been used for long time applied to characters or to alleles. A dominant character masks the expression of an alternative form. This loose definition would even apply when these alternatives are not determined by alleles of the same locus. In turn, a dominant allele refers to an alternative version at the same locus. This dual usage has led, as expected, to some confusion and shows how statistics can complement verbal definitions. Mendel, the pioneer of genetics, did not know the bases of the phenomenon of dominance. Nor was he completely certain to look at characters defined by alleles. But the ubiquity of the phenomenon caused him to elevate his observations to the category of laws, that went, unfortunately, unnoticed until they were rediscovered decades later. Today, dominance and recessivity are concepts commonly used and not only by geneticists. Yet a question remains: do we really understand which are the mechanisms of dominance? This book is an example of an almost self-organized system. Its main driving force has been the enthusiasm of scholars from all over the world that have agreed to write down their thoughts to enlighten our comprehension of dominance. The book relies upon self-contained chapters. They can be considered in the context of a whole, or as separate documents.

This is not an encyclopedia of science fiction, and it's not an encyclopedia of science, either. Instead, it discusses the impact of fantastic literature on science and vice versa. Author Stableford is a science-fiction writer as well as a frequent contributor to works about the genre. In an introduction, he describes the encyclopedia as a way "to construct and maintain bridges between the cultures of science and fiction."

The approximately 300 entries are academic in tone and cover topics such Botany, Postmodernism, andTime travel.Writers, like Ursula K. Le Guin, are included on the basis "of the relevance of their works to issues in science, rather than their importance within the history of genre science fiction." Also profiled are leading theorists such as Johannes Kepler and Karl Marx. Entries make frequent reference to fictional and scientific titles, but no bibliographies for further readings are included. A "Thematic List of Entries" groups entries by broad topics such as "Concepts," "Leading Figures: Scientists," and "Technology." The index includes titles mentioned in the text, which enhances the volume's usefulness.

The Greenwood Encyclopediaof Science ictionand Fantasy: Themes, Works, and Wonders (2005) also has thematic essays, but it focuses more on the science-fiction aspect of the concepts being described. Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (Facts On File, 2005) has a more literary focus. Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. The philosophy underlying the previous edition stays the same. The presentation of concepts is rigorous but neither difficult nor trivial, suitable for readers with basic notions of linear algebra. Moreover, new material has been added.

Chapter 3, which deals with block ciphers and linear and differential cryptoanalysis, is very well-written. This is the best presentation of such a subject in few pages I have seen until now.

Chapters 4, 5, 6 and 7 have been significantly updated and expanded with concepts and techniques that are fundamental in order to understand current researches and state of knowledge in Cryptography (e.g., random oracle model, semantic security, new attacks against public key cryptosystems, an in-depth introduction to elliptic curve ...).

Compared to the previous edition, more emphasys has been given in some parts to security proofs (e.g, chapter 4), and several new exercises have been proposed at the end of each chapter.

Other readers have pointed out that there are some typos (the author has made available an errata list on his home page) but I think that the value of the book is not reduced in any way.

In my opinion it is a great book for people who want to be introduced to problems, ideas, and techniques used in Cryptography.

The micelle architecture, as well as the lipophilic-hydrophilic character, leads logically to the consideration of dendrimers as supramolecular components; this potential is herein chronicled.

Dendrimers are first examined with respect to their ability to solubilize molecular guests in environments that, without added dendrimer, would exhibit unfavorable solubility properties, such as dissolution of water-insoluble molecules. Numerous dendritic architectures are highlighted with respect to this phenomenon.

The potential of dendrimers to encapsulate molecular species is further examined from the perspective of catalysis and the ability to improve reaction rates and yields. As well, their use as components facilitating chromatographic separations is discussed. Finally, the use of dendrimers to effect noncovalent molecular ordering is examined.

About the Author
Ken Whitten is Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia. Dr. Whitten received his A.B. at Berry College, M.S. at the University of Mississippi, and Ph.D. at the University of Illinois. He taught at Tulane, the University of Southwestern Louisiana, the Mississippi State College of Women, and the University of Alabama, before joining the UGA faculty as Assistant Professor and Coordinator of General Chemistry in 1967. He remained Coordinator of General Chemistry throughout his UGA career until his retirement in 1998. His numerous awards include the G. E. Philbrook Chemistry Teacher of the Year Award, the Outstanding Honor's Professor, the Franklin College Outstanding Teacher of the Year, the General Sandy Beaver Teaching Award, and a Senior Teaching Fellowship. An award was established in Dr. Whitten's honor in 1998 celebrating outstanding teaching assistants in UGA's department of chemistry. Ray Davis is a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his B.S. at the University of Kansas in 1960, his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1965, and was a Cancer Research Scientist at the Roswell Park Memorial Institute from 1964 to 1968. He is a well-decorated teacher, with awards including the Minnie Stevens Piper Professorship in 1992, the Jean Holloway Award in Chemistry Teaching in 1996, and (five times) the Outstanding Teacher Award given by campus freshman honor societies. He was an inaugural member of the University's Academy of Distinguished Teachers in 1995. Larry Peck, Professor and Director of First Year Chemistry Programs at Texas A&M University, has his Ph.D. from Montana State University. He earned the school's Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award in Chemistry Teaching in 2002 and the Catalyst Award (a national award for excellence in Chemistry Teaching) presented by the Chemical Manufacturers Association in 2000. Dr. Peck is very active in science teaching at all levels. Each summer for the past 17 years, he has hosted an AP Chemistry Teachers' Workshop, and for the past 12 years he has directed programs designed to improve the teaching of physical science, programs now known in Texas as "integrated physics and chemistry." The resource materials developed in these workshops are currently being used as models for other state-funded teacher training programs. George Stanley, Cyril & Tutta Vetter Alumni Professor at Louisiana State University, received his B.S. from the University of Rochester in 1975 and his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in 1979. Protests Take Generals By Surprise

Burma's generals are expected to hold crisis meetings this week to decide how to react to the biggest anti-government protests since they ruthlessly crushed a mass uprising in 1988.

Thousands join protests

The demonstration shows no sign of abating, the monks are on the march - in their tens of thousands - and they have done this for seven days running now.

One observer estimated as many as 100,000 shaven-headed religious devotees all dressed in identical red habits swamped the streets of the capital.

In a nation where even the name demonstrates bias (the military junta renamed the country Myanmar but it is still recognised as Burma by Britain and Australia for instance), the outpouring of peaceful defiance appears to have taken the military authorities by surprise.

They appeared to be at a loss when the monks marched past the Opposition leader, Aung San Suu Kyi's home over the weekend.

The diminutive pro-democracy campaigner who has been under house arrest or in jail for most of the past 17 years, briefly came outside to greet the protesters and in so doing gave a huge boost to the demonstration.

The military quickly realised their tactical mistake and the barbed wire at the end of Ms Kyi's road were soon back in place.

But each day the pro-democracy numbers have swelled. What first began as a relatively small protest against rising cooking gas prices (they soared 500%) has quickly become a nationwide demand for regime-change - with demonstrations too in the country's second city, Mandalay.

The military junta which has ruled the country since the Sixties is feared and hated in equal measure. The Government controls everything and dissent is usually met with force.

The people marching now know that - and that's what makes their public demonstration all the more astonishing.

Monks angry at government

In any country the sight of tens of thousands of chanting monks taking to the streets would be remarkable.

But in Burma, the last time any protest of this size was witnessed, it was met with bloody force which left thousands dead - including monks.

At the moment, they have been peaceful protests but the images show a growing confidence among a people who have been quiet for a long long time.

They seem to sense the time for change could be now.

The US Secretary Of State Condoleeza Rice has said the Bush Government is 'watching very carefully' the democracy demonstrations.

But many believe the international community has been woeful in its attempts to help the Burmese and now is the time to turn the screws on the military junta and demand change.
